The Board of Directors of the Chilliwack Curling Club (the “Society”) hereby gives notice of a Special General Meeting (SGM) to vote on the adoption of updated bylaws.

The Proposal and Legal Review: The Board has undertaken a comprehensive project to modernize our governance. We have consulted with Martha Rans, a lawyer who specializes in non-profit law, on two separate occasions to review these changes. This professional review ensures our new bylaws are concise, legally robust, and fully compliant with the BC Societies Act.
Why We Are Updating Our Bylaws: Our current governance documents contain provisions dating back decades—such as the requirement for a “$50 Member’s Certificate”—that no longer align with modern standards.
- Simplified Governance: The new structure allows the club to remain agile. By moving specific operational procedures into Board Policies, we can adapt more quickly to technological advancements and societal changes without requiring a full bylaw amendment for minor administrative updates.
- Board Expertise and Continuity: We are updating eligibility to ensure we can retain valuable leadership. For example, dedicated curlers who may be on medical leave but possess professional expertise (legal, financial, or technical) will now be able to continue serving the club on the Board.
- Modernizing Membership: We are moving away from the old certificate model to a standard membership structure that reflects how the club operates today.
Voting Information: In accordance with our current bylaws, a special resolution is required to alter the bylaws.
- Quorum: 15 members must be present to conduct the meeting.
- No Proxies: Please note that voting by proxy is not permitted under our current rules.
